Facial muscle control is managed by the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII), which dictates movements for expressions, speech, and eating by acting on roughly 20 flat muscles. These muscles connect directly to skin—rather than just bone—controlling the forehead, eyelids, nose, cheeks, and lips, with the orbicularis oris handling lip pucker and speech, and muscles like the zygomaticus lifting the mouth. 

Key Aspects of Facial Muscle Control:

• Innervation: The facial nerve (CN VII) consists of five main branches—temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical—which provide motor control to these muscles.

• Function: These muscles (also known as mimetic muscles) allow for emotions like smiling, frowning, and raising eyebrows.

• Motor Nucleus: The brainstem's facial motor nucleus coordinates these movements, with specific areas controlling the upper versus lower face.

• Controls:

• Eyes: Orbicularis oculi (closes eyelids).

• Mouth/Lips: Orbicularis oris (closes/puckers lips), Zygomaticus (lifts corners of the mouth).

• Cheeks: Buccinator (compresses cheek).

• Forehead/Scalp: Frontalis (raises eyebrows). 

Disorders Affecting Control:

• Bell's Palsy: A viral, temporary weakness or paralysis of the facial nerve resulting in drooping on one side.

• Hemifacial Spasm: Involuntary, rapid twitching of muscles, often caused by a blood vessel compressing the nerve. 

Muscular Retraining:

To regain or strengthen facial control, exercises such as voluntary smiling, stretching the corners of the mouth laterally, and raising the eyebrows are often utilized.
