DEFINITION
A lobotomy is a brain surgery to treat mental health conditions where part of the frontal lobe is removed or cut.
The surgery severs most of the connections to and from the prefrontal cortex, and the anterior part of the frontal lobes of the brain. From the 1930s until the 1970s, the treatment was used for handling psychiatric disorders as a mainstream procedure in some countries
Most significant complications of lobotomy were epilepsy (12%) and a personality defect (91%). The results of this lobotomy study were examined in relationship to current psychiatric therapy, with particular reference to recent clinical experience with lobotomy.
Lobotomies are not performed anymore because they are now considered unethical and obsolete. The two main types of lobotomies were prefrontal lobotomy and transorbital lobotomy. Lobotomies were stopped because they caused harm and had a high rate of complications.
Some lobotomies resulted in death, while others resulted in patient vegetative states. Some lobotomies reduced patients to childlike states with diminished emotions. Worldwide, lobotomies have been banned by numerous countries. Despite the controversy, lobotomies are not federally illegal in the United States.
