ALBERTA PROVINCE. CANADA 24 HOUR CLOCK

As of April 1, 2024, Alberta's provincial fuel tax is 13 cents per litre for gasoline and diesel, with a reduced rate of 4 cents per litre for marked (farm/specific industries) fuel. Following a suspension period, the tax is adjusted quarterly based on the price of oil. Federal excise taxes and GST also apply.

Key Alberta Fuel Tax Details

• Provincial Tax Rate: 13 cents per litre (effective April 1, 2024).

• Marked Fuel Rate: 4 cents per litre for marked gasoline and diesel.

• Tax Adjustments: The province reinstated and adjusts this tax based on oil prices.

• Exemptions: Specific exemptions exist for qualifying farmers or industrial users.

Other Taxes on Fuel in Alberta

• Federal Excise Tax: 10 cents per litre on gasoline and 4 cents per litre on diesel.

• GST: 5% GST is charged on the total cost, including fuel, federal excise tax, and provincial tax.

• Federal Carbon Charge: The federal carbon levy applies in Alberta.

• Federal Excise Tax Increase: The federal government increased the tax on locomotive fuel to 6.5 cents per litre, effective March 1, 2025.
